From Assembly to Ecosystem: India's Electronics Factories Face the Harder Chapter
Production-linked incentives brought phone and electronics assembly to India. The next test is components, skills and suppliers. A sector outlook for manufacturers.

From Assembly to Depth
India has built a visible electronics assembly base. Large contract manufacturers now ship phones and devices at scale, supported by production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes and clusters around Noida and Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, Chennai-Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu and Bengaluru-adjacent Karnataka. The harder chapter is depth. Assembly captures a slice of a product's value. Components such as displays, batteries, PCBs and precision parts capture much more, and most are still imported.
Three Things the Sector Needs
Component suppliers. The government's component-manufacturing support schemes aim to bring suppliers closer to assemblers. For MSMEs, this opens a Tier-2 opportunity (see our MSME & Growth guide on winning a supplier slot).
Skills. Technicians trained on surface-mount lines, testing and quality systems are in demand. ITIs and employer-led academies are the pipeline.
Logistics and power reliability. An electronics line cannot idle for a power cut or a delayed shipment of chips.

What to Watch
What to watch: whether incentive-linked investment translates into domestic value addition and whether supplier clusters form around anchor plants.
More pieces to commission: machine-tool revival in Rajkot and Coimbatore; the role of Gati Shakti in plant logistics; MSME packaging suppliers to electronics; women on assembly lines.
