Ten-Minute Delivery Becomes a Mass Habit: What Redseer's Numbers Imply
Quick commerce is projected to grow more than six times faster than the rest of e-commerce in the festive season. Growth on that scale puts pressure on everyone around it.

Scale and Velocity: Doubling for Three Consecutive Years
Redseer's September 2026 report, as reported by BW Retail World and Business India News, put the quick-commerce market at about US$9 billion in the first half of 2026, doubling for the third straight year, with more than 60 million monthly transacting users on average. It projected 110% to 120% growth during the festive season, against 16% to 18% for the rest of e-commerce. Grocery was projected to grow 48% to 50% in the festive season, and beauty and personal care 35% to 40%. Redseer's Kushal Bhatnagar said the momentum would come from "quick commerce & value commerce". The articles did not state quick commerce's share of the market.
The scale: our arithmetic: If a market is US$9 billion in a half-year and doubling annually, a rough annualised figure is around US$18 billion, though festive and seasonal patterns make such a calculation crude. We do not have a full-year forecast in the sources, so we do not offer one.
Why Growth Is So Fast: Four Driving Structural Dynamics
1. Habit formation: Once consumers use fast delivery for milk, vegetables or a forgotten item, they begin ordering more categories: beauty, electronics accessories, gifts. The projected festive growth in beauty and personal care suggests this widening. 2. Dense dark-store networks: The DAM Capital figures covered in our Scaling pieces showed over 1,100 dark stores each at Zepto and Instamart, and over 2,200 at Blinkit, as of the end of FY26. Closer inventory means faster service. 3. Convenience beats price for many users: The emphasis on "value commerce" in the quotation suggests price still matters, but speed is a premium feature that people pay for. 4. Festive gifting: The festive window brings last-minute purchases, which suit quick delivery.
“Speed has become a habit; profit is still the open question.”
The Profitability Question & Operating Unit Economics
Fast growth does not by itself make money. Our Scaling piece on Zepto reported, from Inc42's reading of filings, that the company's net loss widened to Rs 5,905 crore in FY26, with delivery cost per order roughly flat. The DAM Capital comparison showed negative adjusted EBITDA as a share of net revenue value at two of the three players and zero at the third. We do not have comparable profitability data for the whole sector.
While gross order volume climbs rapidly, dark-store rental escalation in prime residential neighborhoods, picker labor, rider incentives, and localized wastage on perishable stock exert persistent downward drag on platform EBITDA.
What It Means for Brands, Kirana Stores and Gig Workers
Guidance for consumer brands: • Pack and price for the channel: Small pack sizes, impulse-friendly price points and attractive packaging perform better. But margins are thin after platform fees and promotions. • Understand the economics of listing: Ask for a full breakdown of margins, fees, promotional contributions and return policies before committing stock. • Avoid channel conflict: If prices differ across channels, retailers and distributors may push back. Plan your pricing architecture. • Use data: Fast channels produce data on repeat purchases and substitution. Brands that learn from it improve forecasting. • Do not depend on one channel: If a platform changes terms, you need alternatives.
What it means for neighbourhood stores: Kirana stores compete on credit, relationships and local knowledge. Some adopt open-network or quick-commerce tie-ups, others add delivery by phone message. Stocking fast-moving items and offering short-radius doorstep delivery are practical responses.
What it means for gig workers and labour: Faster delivery requires large numbers of delivery partners. Zepto's monthly active delivery partners rose to 221,667 in FY26. New state rules on social security for gig workers carry direct cost implications for platform operators.
A Channel Test Template for Consumer Brands
Estimate the contribution per unit after platform commission, promotion share, delivery or handling fee and expected wastage. Check that it is positive at the price shoppers will accept. Estimate how many units per store per day you could sell if the product is on the shelf, and what stock you must hold. If the numbers work only at very high volume, start with a limited pilot in one city and review after a month.
What to watch: Whether the festive-season growth lives up to the forecast; whether platforms report improved unit economics; and whether regulation of platforms, discussed in RE5, alters merchant listing practices.
